SRC leads the 2014 Winter Olympics Challenge

Move over Sochi and move over Glasgow! The Lucas Heights Community School Winter Olympic Games 2014 was a fun filled TWO weeks of games led by the SRC.

A week before the Games each grade was assigned a country. Year 7 was blessed with Canada, and Year 8 was gifted with the USA who, despite the fact that they were a declining superpower, created the aura of confidence. Year 9 was endowed with the gift of France, Year 10 was anointed with the Jamaica, Year 11 was baptised with Germany and Year 12 were honoured to be given Russia.

The first day of the games we had the Biathlon. This had a large turn out as everyone was eager to see what the games were going to be like. This event was won by Jamaica followed by the USA and in third place was Russia. The second event was Bobsleigh which also had a large turnout. Russia won with the Jamaicans unfortunately coming in at second place and bringing up the rear was Germany. The third event was mixed. First place in this event went to the USA followed by France and in third place again was Germany. The fourth event in the Lucas Heights Community School Winter Olympic Games was Snowball Dodge Ball. For a change, this event was won by Germany, the USA again playing second fiddle followed by France in third place. Ice melting was the final event. This event was probably the most important as it decided who would win the LHCS Winter Olympic Games. Jamaica won with the USA a disappointing second place. Finally, the last bronze medal went to France.

Although this was all fun and games, lots of hard work was put in especially from Patrick Wilson (Year 9 SRC) who coordinated the whole event.

SRC achievements 2011 / 2012

The SRC had a very busy year in 2011. The aim was to support charities, to help improve the school and support the student body.  2012 is also proving to be full of activity. We have been asked to represent the students and our school on numerous activities.

Our first priority of the year was to escort parents and students around the school on Open Night.  All of the SRC members wore the red school jumpers and directed groups around the school, displaying the new Science Labs and the Creo Pro Engineering software used for the F1 in Schools display in the computer rooms. The guides did a really good job showcasing the school and were helpful answering questions.

One of the first events of 2011 and 2012 was Commonwealth Day. On this occasion some of the SRC members went into the city and participated in the event by holding a variety of flags from different nations forming a guard of honour for V.I.P. members and the Governor General.  The SRC members involved represented our school with pride and enjoyed the day!

At present the SRC is involved in writing the SRC Constitution.  This will be a formal document each member inducted into the SRC is to sign.  The Constitution will include:

  •     Attendance Policies
  •     how members should represent the school,
  •     Uniform Policies
  •     Behaviour Policies
  •     plus much more!

The Constitution is to be completed in 2012.

Another goal of the SRC has been to get everyone actively involved in the Sports Carnival. To enhance participation and to encourage everyone to dress in house colours, Big W vouchers valued at $20 were distributed to the 'Best Dressed' person from each age group. We found this a successful activity as there were more students dressed in house colours compared to previous years! Another activity introduced at the Sports Carnival was the 'Teacher's Novelty Race.' For this activity a number of obstacles were set up for teachers. One teacher was assigned to each year group to complete the following activities:

  •     dress up in a fancy dress outfit while racing
  •     spell a difficult last name from their grade
  •     complete an 'egg and spoon' race
  •     hula-hoop down the track
  •     run with a balloon between their legs and pop it at the finish line.

The SRC awarded a prize for the winning grade… A Pizza Day! Miss Thomas, who represented Year 9, won the race and they were rewarded with a pizza day later that year. Year 9 was very happy!

In 2011, the SRC started an SRC budget. This will be beneficial for the following years in case we needed a supply of resources, equipment or pizza! To raise funds for the SRC, we decided to hold a Bake Sale in late Term 2. This was a huge success and we even had to hold the fundraiser over 2 days!

Entertainment Books sold through the school by Ms Homma also raised money for the SRC budget which used to subsidise Leadership conferences.

Another fundraiser, in conjunction with the Year 12 class of 2012, was 'Slushy Day.' This was a very profitable few days and we found students really enjoyed their slushies!

Throughout 2011 the SRC supported some charities. The 2 major organisations supported were the '40 Hour Famine' and 'Canteen'. Fundraising for these charities was completed throughout Terms 3 and 4. The SRC did a great job in fundraising and advertising these charities.

To improve leadership skills a number of the Year 9 and 10 2011 SRC members attended the 'Rising Generations' leadership incursion. All of the participants found the day inspiring and learnt new techniques for leadership and getting the most out of life. All the participants would recommend others participate in the conference in 2012.

This year the SRC are planning to further support charities, complete the constitution and continue work within the school. The following outlines our goals for 2012:

  •     support the World's Greatest Shave
  •     attend local and regional SRC meetings
  •     complete the SRC Constitution
  •     participate in the 40 Hour Famine
  •     nominate students to attend the Global Leaders Conference
  •     help at Open Night
  •     raise money for the SRC
  •     help out and enhance participation in sports carnivals
  •     SRC students to attend the Impact Leadership Conference
  •     SRC members to attend Commonwealth Day
  •     support Canteen
  •     represent the concerns and views of the student body and communicate this to staff and school executive.

I am sure 2012 will be a successful year for the SRC!
