On Wednesday 8 June 2016, Lucas Heights Community School hosted a Creative and Performing Arts day. The day comprised of four studio intensive workshops such as Visual Arts, Drama, Music and Dance. There were four participating schools: Lucas Heights Community School, Bangor Primary School, Padstow Park Public School and Padstow Heights Public School. Each student achieved success in the workshop of their choice. The students were motivated and displayed enthusiasm and excitement throughout the day. It was a delight to see the students achieve impressive results in each studio intensive workshop.

Visual Arts: Putting the Arts into STEM

STEM + ARTS= STEAM

Students worked with artist in residence Liz Shreeve and  STEAMpop founders Melissa Silk and Annette Mauer who are also contributors to the Vivid Light Festival now on from 27 May 2016- 18 June 2016. The students were intrigued and the workshop sparked curiosity and imagination in developing the artworks throughout the day. The first project was an artwork based on patternation and mathematics principles which were then applied in an artwork. The students participated in a  presentation on various artists that use these principles in their own artworks such as M.C.Escher. Students created individual and collaborative works under the guidance of specialist teachers and practising artist Liz Shreeve. The workshop participants then continued to make another artwork using a Lumifold Kit to make a stunning lamp using the origami Sekkei technique which is a form of mathematical paper folding and expressed symmetries and iteration. By making these artworks the students were able to visualise mathematical concepts and scientific ideas. The workshop allowed the students to recognise that Visual Arts and Design can play a significant role in exploring and understanding Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) and in turn STEAM to create aesthetically pleasing objects.

Anyone that would like to purchase a Lumifold Kit, please visit: http://steampop.zone/. Also if you would like to create your own patterns, digitally, please see the link below for I-ornament. The possibilities are endless.

Drama

Working in small groups, students reimagined their bodies and surroundings to create spontaneous scenes. With a focus on comedy and self-expression, students explored and developed self-confidence, presentation and group work skills.

Students learned through practical activity, using movement and voice in a variety of games to develop fundamental acting skills. These activities cumulated in a series of short improvised scenes and were performed in front of an audience.

Music

Students used technology to create their own music. They were able to unleash their creativity with unlimited tracks, sounds, effects, sampled drums and virtual instruments with the best sounding technology available. At this workshop students explored a plethora of virtual instruments including classic synthesisers, rock organs, electric pianos, sampled drums and percussion. Students arranged their own beats and sounds into their own personal style and created tracks with a tremendous array of professional effects using the Mixcraft 7 program. These compositions were then performed in front of a real audience.

Dance

The dance workshop provided a fun but focused environment introducing students to new ways of moving, thinking and expressing themselves. During the workshop students were taken through a thorough warm-up before learning specific movement phrases and putting together an original routine inspired by fun, upbeat drumming and exploring improvisation skills, rhythm and timing.
