Technological and applied studies (TAS) is mandatory for all students in Year 7 and 8. Students can also select from a range of elective TAS subjects.

In TAS, students develop knowledge, understanding and skills through a design and production process using a range of tools, materials and techniques in theory and practical lessons.

The continuum of technology learning is:

  • mandated from Kindergarten to Year 8 through Science and Technology K-6 and Technology Mandatory Years 7-8 syllabuses
  • based on students becoming increasingly sophisticated in their ability to apply knowledge, skills and understanding to design and produce solutions
  • optional for student specialisation in high school through a range of syllabuses addressing particular technologies and aspects of design.

Available courses include:

TAS - Technology and Applied Studies

Technology and Applied Studies subjects allow students to apply subject specific content to real life tasks. Higher order thinking skills are required to design, produce and evaluate products.

Course content is designed to allow students to apply learnt information to create products. For example, if students learn about nutrition in food technology, they may design, justify and make a meal for a person's specific nutritional requirements. In IST (Information Software Technology) if students learn about the internet and webpage development, they may produce a webpage for a specific client or purpose. For example the

TAS subjects enable students to responsibly, safely and creatively use and select materials, tools and techniques to create products.

Year 7 & 8 Technology (Mandatory)

Students in Years 7 & 8 at LHCS design and produce the following products which focus on textiles, food, wood, and metal technologies:

  • Textiles - students produce a stool cover and bag
  • Food - students produce a party business presentation and package a healthy snack food
  • Timber - students produce a stool and storage system
  • Digital Technologies - The Digital Technologies context encourages students to develop an empowered attitude towards digital technologies.

Once students have completed the technology mandatory course in Years 7 & 8 they may decide to choose an elective or electives in Years 9 and/or Year 10 which focus on one or more of the subject-specific areas they enjoy.

Years 9 and 10 TAS electives

In Years 9 and 10 students can choose either 200-hour (2 years) or 100 hours (1 year) elective courses.
